Press Release
Huelin-Renouf Shipping is adding the Normandy port of Cherbourg to the lifeline freight link it operates between the Channel Islands and the UK.
Huelin-Renouf, the largest Channel Islands-owned shipping company, will launch its new French service from Friday, 12 March, when the company makes its first scheduled weekly visit to Cherbourg en route for Southampton.
The announcement of Huelin-Renouf's latest port of call comes a week after the company added Alderney to its schedule, and is the latest development in a period of substantial investment and growth by Huelin-Renouf. This began in January last year with the relocation of the company's UK operations to a multi-million pound, purpose-built logistics terminal in Southampton and has also seen the company substantially increasing its cargo-carrying capacity and number of sailings on the UK-Channel Islands routes. In addition the investment has resulted in the introduction of new services, such as the capacity to carry chilled and frozen products.
The Chairman of the Huelin-Renouf Group, Jonathan Bale, said the new link to Cherbourg - with its extensive transport links within France and to the network hubs of Europe - would open up new possibilities for import to, and export from, the Channel Islands.
‘We are delighted to work with our counterparts in Cherbourg to provide this new gateway to and from mainland Europe for our customers. Huelin-Renouf has a long and distinguished history serving the needs of Channel Islanders, and we are committed to providing the best possible connections and service for our customers in the islands, the UK and mainland Europe. We are also delighted to be able to close the loop between the Channel Islands, the UK and the Continent, and we look forward to developing these ties with our new French connection.'
The simultaneous announcement today in Normandy and the islands follows months of talks between Huelin-Renouf, the General Council of La Manche, Ports Normandy Association and SAS Port de Cherbourg.
Huelin-Renouf carries all kinds of cargo from essential food supplies to construction materials daily from Monday to Friday between Jersey, Guernsey and Southampton, with the new twice-weekly visit, on Tuesday and Thursday, to Braye Harbour in Alderney. The new French service will commence with a weekly voyage to Cherbourg, arriving to discharge and load each Friday. Huelin-Renouf anticipates that the frequency of visits to Cherbourg will be increased once the route is established. The large capacity of the French port will offer new opportunities for businesses in the Channel Islands and France to import and export goods, whilst also providing a new direct link between Cherbourg and the UK.
