Huelin-Renouf Shipping Delivers for the National Trust

Georgian furniture, which graced a fine Jersey house more than two centuries ago, has come home to take pride of place in 16 New Street thanks to Huelin-Renouf Shipping.

The Georgian town house is being restored by the National Trust for Jersey and is due to open to the public in the autumn. The four items of antique furniture, one of which is believed to have been hand made in the Island in the 1700s, are on loan for five years from a private collection in Norfolk.

When faced with cost of getting the furniture from East Anglia to New Street, the National Trust turned to Huelin-Renouf Shipping.

The company's Chief Executive Officer, Keith Renouard, said they were more than happy to help the trust in its 75^th year, as they had in other aspects of the New Street refurbishment. The company previously transported a Regency fire grate and equipment for the property's modern kitchen extension from the UK.

'As a long-established Channel Islands business, Huelin-Renouf Shipping is dedicated to supporting a variety of projects, in both Bailiwicks - including Alderney - and its UK home port, and France  in support of maritime, education, arts and heritage projects. The National Trust does a fantastic job protecting and promoting the Island's heritage and environment so we are always willing to lend our expertise to such a worthy organisation in whatever way we can,' he said.

The items of furniture are: a 300-year-old walnut chest on stand (believed to have been made in the Island); and a small sideboard (known as a 'Low Boy'), a 'knee hole' desk, and a card table - all dating from 1750 to 1820.

National Trust chief executive Charles Alluto said they were all wonderful pieces and typical of the kind of furniture that would have filled the rooms at No 16 when it was one of the finest townhouses in St Helier.

'It is wonderful to see the furniture returning home and we are grateful to Huelin-Renouf for their kind assistance in shipping to the Island , not just one consignment for the successful completion of the project but three. The company's generosity and support for the project has been crucial in saving the Trust thousands of pounds which has been spent restoring No 16 to its original glory,' he said.

Constructed in the 1730s, 16 New Street is one of the finest remaining early Georgian houses in St Helier. Works are continuing on the redecorating of the building and it is hoped to open 16 New Street late September as part of the Trust's 75^th Anniversary celebrations. To date more than £1million has been spent on the restoration and this has largely been funded from an unrestricted bequest from the late Mrs Houston.

The community projects, events and activities which have also received Huelin-Renouf's support in recent years include, but are not limited to: Jersey Sailing Trust, Jersey Arts Trust, Jersey Arts Centre, the Jersey Construction Awards and the winter ice rink
